A michi-no-eki (roadside station) where you can see Okinawa’s coexistence with U.S. military bases

Michi-no-Eki Kadena is located northward of Naha and is a place where you can purchase Okinawan local products and dine. Michi-no-Eki Kadena is located in Kadena Town, where Kadena Air Base and Kadena Ammunition Storage Area are located. The facilities take up over 80% of the land area of Kadena Town and you can experience the coexistence with U.S. military bases here.

At Rotary Drive-Inn UP-KITTY you can get a famous Jumbo Burger and enjoy it as you observe the military base. The burger is 2 times larger than the average burger and even male adults will be satiated by just 1 burger. There is also another shop called Ryukyu Cha-ya Nabi-ya, which sells Okinawan-style zenzai (red bean shaved ice) and freshly fried sata andagi (Okinawan donuts).

Kadena is known as the first place in Okinawa where sweet potatoes were introduced from China and a sweet potato known as the Noguni-imo is cultivated here. At Michi-no-Eki Kadena you can try the popular Noguni-imo soft serve ice cream, which is made with the noguni-imo sweet potato.

There is an observation deck on the roof and on weekdays you can see fighter jets taking off and landing at Kadena Air Base. Inside there are educational exhibits about the history of Kadena Town and the U.S. military bases, making it a spot where you can think about peace.
