Ocean Expo Park
A very popular spot where you can experience Okinawa’s ocean and history
Ocean Expo Park is a national government park that was opened to commemorate the Okinawa International Marine Exposition held in Okinawa in 1975.
You may not have heard of the Ocean Expo Park before, but you probably have heard of the Churaumi Aquarium, an essential sightseeing spot that is located in the park.
The Churaumi Aquarium exhibits the impressiveness of Okinawa’s oceans
The most impressive feature of the Churaumi Aquarium is by far its giant tank. With a height of 8.2 meters, width of 22.5 meters and glass 60 centimeters thick, you can watch as whale sharks and reef manta rays swim around the tank. The tank recreates Okinawa’s ocean and contains a variety of fish. It is unlike any other aquarium in Japan, or the world, for that matter.
See a dolphin show up-close at the Oki-chan Theatre
At the Oki-chan Theatre in Ocean Expo Park you can enjoy a dolphin show and even interact with dolphins. There is also a Sea Turtle Pool and Manatee Pool, where you can see creatures characteristic of Okinawa’s oceans.
See Okinawa’s nature and traditions at the Native Okinawan Village and Omoro Arboretum
You can experience Okinawa’s nature and traditions at the Native Okinawan Village and Omoro Arboretum. Here, you can see performances of Okinawa’s traditional dances and sanshin free-of-charge. Furthermore, you can also meet local people here.
