Sefa Utaki Sacred Site

World Heritage Site – Sefa Utaki

Utaki is a general term that refers to sacred sites that can be found throughout the islands of Okinawa. Sefa Utaki is a sacred site that is mentioned in legends of the origins of Ryukyu and is considered the most sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom. In the utaki there are 6 ibi (sanctuaries), including Ufugui, Yuinchi and Sangui, which are also the names of rooms in Shurijo Castle. This expresses the deep connections between Shurijo Castle and Sefa Utaki.

As there are slippery areas and sudden inclines and stairs, we recommend wearing sneakers or other comfortable footwear. It is not accessible to wheelchairs nor strollers.

Guided tours are available for those who would like to learn more about myths related to Sefa Utaki and the history and spiritual culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
